Oakland +140 over Boston

9:40 PM EST. When James Kaprielian (RHP - OAK) graduated from prospect land, he was pegged to be a middle of the rotation starter. Unfortunately, he has been sidelined by injuries. “Kap” has made just six starts here in 2022, as the A’s ease him into that role, but there have been some encouraging signs. His xERA is lower than his surface number and he’s shown to be getting stronger over his last three starts. Kaprielian has struck out 11 hitters while walking just two in the 14.2 innings he pitched in those three starts.

Spotting a price on the road with Nathan Eovaldi (RHP - BOS) is not as appealing as it seems or not as appealing as years past. The problem with laying the lumber with Eovaldi is that you never know what you are going to get. In his last start, he picked up the win after pitching a complete game. That was last Saturday in Beantown against Baltimore. We’re not saying a complete game isn’t nice, but it was against the Orioles. Prior to that, Eovaldi had a season high 11 punchouts against the Mariners (May 22). Again, he pitched at home. If one were to go back just one more start (May 17, also in Boston), he got rocked by the Astros (1.2 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 0 K’s). While it looks like he has bounced back since that start, he did it against inferior competition. It’s been three weeks since Eovaldi made a road start.

On the surface, the market is going to like what they see in those recent results. However, those last two starts just mean Eovaldi’s stock is high. He was -207 against the O’s and -126 against the M’s. Now he’s a bigger price than the latter versus the A’s in Oakland. Inflation is no joke.
