Detroit +215 over Minnesota
7:40 PM EST. One report we received yesterday was that Eduardo Rodriguez was placed on the 15-day injured list with a left rib cage sprain and he was not expected to return until the beginning of June. He started last night and gave up a granny in the very first inning to put the Tigers in a 4-0 hole. Detroit would pepper Minnesota’s staff all night long with 12 hits and three walks, tied the game late but stranded 17 in an eventual 5-4 loss. We’ll come right back on the Tigers today with Beau Brieske (RHP - DET) starting.
Briske combines a sneaky good fastball with three solid secondary pitches and solid command. Brieske had some true gems in the minors last year in which he artfully tied hitters into knots at the top of the zone and then worked them over with changeups and sliders down, as hitters began to protect against the high heat. At his best, he looks remarkably polished. Brieske has long term success in his future. This will be his sixth start and we’re not going to pay a lot of attention to his shaky surface stats, as he’s a kid in the majors and they’re misleading in a small sample size. He’s learning on the go and he’s getting progressively better with each start.
The Tigers are 14-27 but they’re not a .340 team and Sonny Gray (RHP - MIN) is not even close to being an ace but he’s priced like it here. Gray has made five starts this year covering a lousy 21 innings. Back, groin, and rib issues cost him a chunk of last season and may have contributed to his 2nd half swoon, as skills sagged. Frankly, things do not look better this year. His low swing and miss rate (7%) and high K% does not correlate. Gray may eventually get back to his 2019 level but right now he’s not there. His surface stats are misleading and so is Detroit's weak record. Let’s see if we can make the books pay for putting out a bad number here.
Detroit +215 (Risking 2 units - To Win: 4.30)
