8:00 AM EST. Diana Shnaider is on a tear right now. Maybe the most exciting young player on the women's side, the 20-year old Russian has been enjoying her time on grass in 2024. She entered Wimbledon off a tournament win at Bad Homburg last week, unseating Donna Vekic in the finals, who was in great form leading up to their battle. She owns an impressive 71.4% win-rate in service games, which is a major part of why she's been so tough to take down, and she wins considerably more second-serve return points than she loses (55.7%). She already took out veteran Karolina Pliskova in the first round, instantly turning up the volume in the second set to edge out the Czech. Sloane Stephens has never been very consistent in her career, but that's especially true on grass. She enjoyed some success earlier in her career, but the last 7 years she's just 7-10 on the surface. Stephens took advantage of a change in opponent in the first round and swiftly beat up on a qualifier, but it won't be easy sledding against Shnaider. Stephens has only had 3 matches on grass this year and she lost two of them, but it's hard to have an assertive opinion about what we should expect from the American. We know what we can expect from Shnaider, and her disciplined, stoic nature is a great compliment against Stephens, who can be lethal when she catches fire. The young-gun outwits the veteran in this exchange.
