3:00 PM EST. The Las Vegas Aces are limping through the season so far, and there's plenty of evidence to suggest that's not changing any time soon. The championship hangover seems to be in full swing as last year's title holders are now a pedestrian 6-5 straight up this season, and they're even worse ATS: 3-8. The Aces finally got a win on Thursday after losing three straight games, but they still allowed 99 points to the 6-7 Mercury, a program that ranks in the bottom half of the association in offensive efficiency.

And that's been the crux of Vegas' issues. Even with Candace Parker still sidelined and without veteran guard Chelsea Gray as their court general, Vegas is one of the most effective scoring teams in the W, the best unit outside of their opponent tonight. It's their defense, a group that ranks 9th overall this season and dead-last in their last four games, that's the most concerning.

The Liberty cannot relate. Ranking #1 overall on defense over their last four games, only the Connecticut Sun hold a better record than New York (11-1), although it's worth noting that Connecticut's one and only loss was to, you guessed it, the Liberty. New York is also the #1 offense in the association, consistent through all 13 games this early season, and they own the longest current winning streak (7 straight). It's unlikely that point guard Courtney Vandersloot will play tonight, but there's a supreme intangible that tilts the scales in clear favor of New York in this contest.

On paper and in literally every statistical way, New York checks out as the better outfit, but that's not the biggest reason why we like the road pooch this afternoon. As most of our readers probably know, this is New York's first chance at revenge after losing to Vegas in last season's WNBA Championship, a scheduling spot they've undoubtedly been thinking about since last October. Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu have been at the height of their powers, a perfect 1-2 punch from the back and front courts when their team needs it, and their roster is showing maturity and resilience as they navigate another year on top of the Eastern Conference (with another huge target on their back). We love their chemistry and brand of well-balanced basketball they've shown throughout June - they've allowed just 73.4 ppg and averaged 89 ppg this month - and we love them even more with revenge on their minds. It's New York or nothing.
