Wager: Las Vegas 1Q -1½ (-120 at SportsInteraction and Bookmaker)

10:05 PM EST. Last year's WNBA champions haven't gotten off to the hot start they usually do. At 5-4 through four weeks of action, the Las Vegas Aces almost lost as many games as they had all last season (they were 34-6). Injuries to stars like Chelsea Gray (15 points, 7 assists per game) haven't helped this year, but it's not entirely surprising after such a successful campaign. The Aces were a true juggernaut last season, amplified by all-world performances by 2023 WNBA Finals MVP A'ja Wilson, the Aces' star-studded roster was just too much for their competition, which led to a 6-1 postseason run en-route to a title. Regression is not atypical after such unbelievable success, but Tuesday's showdown against the surging Lynx is an inflection point for the team from Sin City.

As it stands today, the Minnesota Lynx are 8-3 and the #1 team in the Western Conference. The Seattle Storm are 2nd, leaving the Aces in a lowly third; certainly not a position they expected one month into the season. Las Vegas is also off two very uncharacteristic losses, getting whooped by 13-points at home to the Storm and then a shocking fail against the 4-7 L.A. Sparks, one of the worst outfits in the W. The Sparks just beat the Aces in all the small ways; more rebounds, more assists, more physicality. They even turned it over 17 times, 11 more than Vegas, and still won by 4-points. The Storm played their best defensive game of the season in their recent win, holding the Aces to just 31.3% from the field and forcing 14 turnovers.

Tonight's wager isn't about the Lynx. Minnesota has played fantastic to start the season and Napheesa Collier is a bonafide star, elevating their chances of winning on a nightly basis. This is about the Las Vegas Aces, last year's champion, reeling off two losses and back at home, wanting to prove a point.

In their first matchup, a contest where Vegas ended up winning by margin, the battle started in a way that suited Minnesota. The Lynx were at home, their defense was on fire, and only 34 points ensued in the first quarter. Vegas still ended up winning by 2-points, but that was a cold start. We expect nothing of the same tonight.

A'ja Wilson and a frustrated Vegas roster spoke at length after their most recent loss, acknowledging their room for improvement, and that's not something we take lightly. The Aces are mostly the same exact program they were last season, although they still miss Candace Parker. Still, with enough firepower to blow out any vulnerable opponent, we expect Becky Hammon's team to be at their best at home on Tuesday. We also like that Minnesota is coming off a huge win against the Storm, cementing their top-spot in the West. A fiery Aces squad will very likely catch them off guard early, and we're happy to wager on that exact outcome.
