Edmonton -4½ over Calgary

7:00 PM EST. The Stampeders seem to be in full panic mode, as they’ve benched starting quarterback Jake Maier following an embarrassing Labour Day home loss to their rival Elks. Despite Maier going 22-of-34 for 297 yards and a touchdown, his four interceptions were the final straw for head coach Dave Dickenson. Now sitting at 3-7, Calgary will turn to first-time starter Logan Bonner, who has spent over a year on the bench. Bonner has dressed as the backup in 15 games but has thrown just 14 passes in the CFL.

Bonner’s background doesn’t inspire much confidence. He went undrafted after playing at Arkansas State and Utah State, and scouting reports suggest he’s a pocket passer with little mobility. For a first pro start, the preparation looks subpar—Calgary held just one closed-door practice this week, which isn’t exactly the recipe for success. The CFL has a long history of chewing up and spitting out inexperienced quarterbacks, and Bonner doesn’t have the pedigree or experience to suggest he’ll break that trend.

While the Stampeders are in disarray, the Elks are on the rise. They’ve won four of their last five, covering the spread in all five games. Edmonton has taken down Saskatchewan, B.C., Hamilton, and Calgary in that span, and also covered as a +7-point underdog in Montreal. With the NFL and college football now in full swing, the CFL has slipped under the radar, leading to an underdeveloped line here. Edmonton is laying deflated points against a quarterback who has yet to play a full CFL game. This one has all the makings of a blowout. Swallow the points.
