Saskatchewan over Toronto
7:00 PM EST. There are many moving parts here, but before we get to the drama on the Argonauts' sidelines, we’re going to highlight the “buy low” opportunity with Saskatchewan, as the Roughriders have gone winless in four straight games after dropping a 27-24 decision to the Alouettes at home in Regina last Friday night. Prior to that, the Roughies played to a 22-22 tie in Ottawa, which came on the heels of back-to-back losses to the Alouettes and the then-winless Elks. Not only have the ‘Riders seen their fortunes on the field turn sour, but they’ve also seen their stock in the market drop considerably after going just 2-4 Against the Spread (ATS) over their last six games, after starting the year paying out like a broken slot machine where they went 4-0 ATS out of the gate. We’ll note that Trevor Harris returned to the Roughriders last week and played well, completing 31/39 passes for 355 yards and two majors.
Now to the Argos, who will “welcome” starting QB Chad Kelly back after his offseason suspension was limited to nine games, the details of which are easily found with a Google search. In short, Kelly was sexually inappropriate with a female staff member; however, a lawsuit that was settled in June set in motion the return of the league’s reigning Most Outstanding Player sooner rather than later. The moral obligations of the league and the team have been questioned, but we all know that the only thing that matters is wins and losses, and it’s going to take a hell of a lot more than what Kelly was accused of to keep a player of his stature out of the lineup. Cripes, the Browns gave Deshaun Watson $200 million, and the list of his transgressions was a mile long.
While the situations are much, much different, we saw the Lions struggle with the return of Nathan Rourke to the fold after spending the first half of the season jumping around NFL training camps. Kelly did not play in the preseason, and he hasn’t sniffed a second of game action through the first nine games of the year. Sure, he could be in midseason form tonight, but is he a better option over Nick Arbuckle or Cameron Dukes, who have both started and won games this season? If Kelly is able to put this team on his back out of the gate and play well tonight, so be it, but that is easier said than done. Kelly brings with him a dark cloud, and it hangs over the Argos and the league. Roughies outright is the call.
