Saskatchewan +4½ over Winnipeg
9:30 PM EST. The Blue Bombers have won two games in a row, and they are now 2-4, with their 0-4 start all but forgotten. After all, Zach Collaros didn’t play in the preseason, so a slow start was to be expected. Not only that, but the Bombers have been riddled with injuries, and a perennial contender such as Winnipeg isn’t worried about games played in June, nor should we be. Those are just some of the sentiments we’ve read in advance of the Blue Bombers' first of three games with hated rival Saskatchewan this week, but we aren’t buying any of it because we remember the panic articles from just a couple of weeks ago when the Bombers were 0-4, and you would have thought their world was caving in.
Two wins do not make a once-great team great again, and truth be told, the Bombers are pretty damn lucky to be 2-4, as they could have dropped both of their victories had they not gotten the breaks. In Week 5 versus Ottawa, Winnipeg won the turnover battle 3-0 and knocked out Redblacks starter Dru Brown in the first half, and they were still in a one-possession ball game with 2:25 to play before a field goal with five seconds to go padded the 25-16 final. Last week, at home versus Calgary, the Bombers edged out the Stampeders 41-37, but they were a -6-point favorite in that game and were incapable of putting Calgary away for good despite having a double-digit lead in the first half that included a pick-six for the Winnipeg defense, which was a gift. The Blue Bombers still have many flaws, and they are spotting inflated points on the road based on their recent run and the current plight of the hometown Roughriders.
Do we like the Roughriders? We do not, but that does not matter because this week that is where the value lies. Last week, when the Roughies were 4-0, they were a +7-point underdog on the road versus the Lions. The market pounced on the Riders in that game, but the Roughies lost by double digits, 35-20. That result was not great, obviously, but it was also a little misleading, as the game was B.C. 22-Sasky 20 with almost a full quarter to play, but the Lions scored 13 points over the final 7:33, including a pair of field goals in the final 1:31 to pad their lead despite being up by nine points in the final minutes. Recent results loom large here, and while the Riders stink, the Bombers stink too, and they are spotting inflated road points against a rival. Regardless of the outcome, over time, that is not going to be a profitable proposition.
