Edmonton +4½ over Toronto

7:00 PM EST. The Elks are 0-2 to start the season, but it could be argued they deserved a better fate in both of those contests. However, the football gods seem determined to make the Elks pay for every slight transgression despite their improved play thus far. In Week 2, the Elks were done in by turnovers and penalties in a 23-20 loss to the defending Grey Cup Alouettes. Quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson has not missed a beat with his new team and now has back-to-back weeks in which he has passed for at least 300 yards. When you have a quarterback in the CFL, you have a chance to win, and MBT is one of the best, as he won a Grey Cup with the Elks' opponents today in 2022.

As for Toronto, it returns after a solid season-opening win over B.C. in which they were a significant underdog on their home field. The Argos entered the season with many questions, especially at the pivot position, but worry not, after just one game, quarterback Cameron Dukes was named the best pivot on CFL.ca’s quarterback ranks. We’re not saying Dukes wasn’t impressive in Week 1, but the Argos have now had two weeks to sit around and read their press clippings, while it remains to be seen if they are able to find any momentum from a game that was played back on June 9. Furthermore, Dukes was sick during the week, and while he returned to practice and the Argos say he’s fine and ready to go tonight, it remains to be seen if that illness and the time off will hamper Dukes and the Boatmen here.

Considering the starts for both sides, this line stands out, as we doubt there is going to be much appetite in the media or the market to back the winless Elks here against a team that looked like a juggernaut in Week 1, but the Argos are in a much different role today than they were in their opener. That double-digit swing in points from pooch to chalk is significant, even if the line looks short on paper. We trust the oddsmakers could have made the Argos a touchdown favorite and not swayed many bets, but they did not. Instead, the Elks are being given a ton of respect from the books, and we aren’t going to ignore that fact. We’ll gladly take back the points here as a cushion and hope we don’t need them, but do not be shocked if the Elks get their first win on the road tonight in Hog Town.
