Edmonton +4 over Montreal
9:00 PM EST. The results of Week 1 often set the stage for the biggest over and underreactions of any given season, and this game tonight in Edmonton fits that bill to a T. First and foremost, the Alouettes started their season as they ended the last, with a win over the mighty Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Last week, the Als were a +7-point pooch in Winnipeg, where they beat the Bombers 27-12. Few in the market or the media were touting the defending Grey Cup champions in that game, but that has changed greatly here in Week 2, as the Als are now being given credit for their recent championship pedigree and the “statement” they made to the Blue Bombers and the rest of the league in Week 1. However, that change in market and media perception has the Als now moving from a significant underdog to a favorite on the road against a much-improved Elks side that was a tough-luck loser in Week 1.
Edmonton had last week’s game in their control after three quarters, as the Elks looked the part of a team that could be a thorn in the side of its opposition this season, but it was not meant to be. The Elks took a 21-8 lead early in the fourth last Saturday versus the Roughriders, but Saskatchewan would score 21 unanswered points over the final 13 minutes of that game to edge out the Elks in a very misleading 29-21 final. The Elks had more total yards than the Roughies, and new QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson threw for 336 yards with two majors and one INT. For those who might not remember, Bethel-Thompson is a legit CFL pivot who won a Grey Cup in 2022, and it didn’t look like he lost a step after a year away from the league. “MBT” gives the Elks a chance to win each and every week, and that is most definitely the case here in Week 2.
X’s and O’s aside, the fact that the Alouettes are now road chalk after being a better-than-touchdown pooch last week is a huge overreaction in the market, and that double-digit swing now presents us with an opportunity to take back a pile of inflated points with an Elks side that the media and market are already writing off as a lost cause. On the CFL’s website, 100% of their “experts” picked the Als to win this game. By the way, those same “experts” had the Bombers as a 100% consensus to win last night, too. We’ll note that for all the accolades the Als are getting for beating the Bombers, the Bombers look to be a mess at the moment, so that win isn’t nearly as impressive as it looks on the surface. As for Week 2, of course, the Elks can win this game outright, but we’re more than delighted to put these inflated points in our back pockets and hope we don’t need them.
