9:05 PM EST. OT included. We bet against the Avs yesterday and while they were badly outplayed by St. Louis. (out-Corsied 66-36 and outshot 45-21), this is an entirely different team at home, where the Preds rank 13th (as oppose to 30th on the road) during 5v5 play in Corsi For % over the past five weeks. The Avalanche are an amazing 24-8-2 at the Pepsi Center and they have more momentum now than they’ve had all season. The Avs are no longer the last Wild Card team, as they leapfrogged over the Stars with last night’s win in St. Louis. However, the race is so tight, as just five points separates seven teams fighting for three playoff spots. The Avalanche have picked up points in five straight at home, they’ve won three straight overall while outscoring the opposition 14-4 over that span. That said, we also know that of the eight teams fighting for three playoff spots, Colorado is the least threatening team of the bunch, which means that the other seven teams that make the playoffs would love to see Colorado get in too as opposed to San Jose, St. Louis, Dallas, Anaheim, Calgary, Los Angeles or Minnesota.

Nashville is in line to play Colorado in the playoffs or of course one of the other aforementioned teams battling and we have to question if they’re motivated enough to beat the Avs. Nashville has played Colorado three times this season and bet them three times. Two of those games were played in Nashville and the Preds won by three goals both times. The Preds played Colorado four times last year and beat them four times. The Preds have beaten Colorado nine straight games dating back two years and again, we have to question what will motivate the Preds to make life miserable for the Avs. If you’re Nashville, would you rather play Colorado or Dallas? Don’t get us wrong here, as we are in no way suggesting that the Preds are “throwing” this game. NHL players are not bred that way. However, subconsciously, the Preds collective mindset might not be one of extra motivation. Here’s a complacent team that won in Arizona last night and is sitting very comfortably in a locked up playoff spot. Ask every Nashville player which team they would choose to play in the first round among the teams battling and 100% of them would likely choose Colorado. Aside from that, we have to trust that the Avs are sick of losing to this team and will leave nothing on the table here against what figures to be a less motivated visitor. Pencil in Colorado as a very live pup here.
