7:30 PM EST. The Red Wings have been off for nearly a week and are coming off a 5-1 loss to Chicago in its last game. They mustered a mere 24 shots on net against the Blackhawks and the game prior, Detroit fired away 21 shots on net against Philadelphia. On pure percentages alone, it’s difficult to score goals or win games when one is not manufacturing enough opportunities to put the puck in the net. Just before the break, Detroit fired away 24 shots on net against Carolina and a lousy 15 shots on net against Dallas the game before that. In recapping, Detroit has 24, 21, 24 and 15 shots on net in four of its last five games and they’re a weak possession team to begin with. That Detroit is evenly priced against the Sharks is absurd but San Jose has lost three straight and it looks ugly on paper.

San Jose lost 5-2 in Pittsburgh last night but had a 2-1 lead with four seconds left in the second when Brett Burns made one of the more bone-headed plays you will ever see in hockey. Without going into detail, Pittsburgh scored on that mistake with four seconds left in the second to tie it and the Pens scored three unanswered goals in the third to make the score a lot worse than it was. The Sharks were dominating the Penguins to a high degree up to that point and had an 18-6 shots on net advantage at one point during the second period. Had it not been for the outstanding goaltending by Matt Murray, San Jose would’ve had a 5-1 lead. Sharks had a major 5v5 Corsi For % edge through two periods as well. In San Jose’s other two losses during this current three-game losing streak, Aaron Dell allowed six goals on 28 shots and the Sharks lost to the Rangers 6-5. In the other loss, a 5-4 defeat to Winnipeg, the Jets scored five goals on 23 shots on net but all this market sees is three losses in a row while allowing five goals or more in each. That sets this one up beautifully, as the Sharks are a well-coached, well-structured team that is ready to blow someone’s head off and they could not have handpicked a better team to do that against. You would be hard pressed to find a team playing at a higher level than the Sharks right now but a massive amount of bad luck has hit them. The losing streak ends right here.
