7:05 PM EST. OT included. The Avs are coming off a somewhat misleading 7-3 victory over Florida on Saturday night but scoring seven times had to feel good for a team that had scored two or less in seven straight previously. Gabriel Landeskog played his second game after serving a four-game suspension and Colorado’s second line of Tyson Jost, Alexander Kerfoot and JT Compher continue to improve and create. These are three talented kids. Colorado’s bottom six is not bad at all with productive players like Colin Wilson, who was a top-six forward for years with Nashville and is still just 28-years old, Matt Nieto and Carl Soderberg among others. On the back-end, Tyson Barrie, Erik Johnson and Sam Girard could crack any defense in the NHL. This is a much improved team from last year coming off a confidence boosting win but this wager is more about fading the overpriced Penguins in a difficult spot.

The Penguins are the Penguins are the Penguins. They can never be counted out and absolutely have the ability to whack this intruder. Pittsburgh was clearly the better team against Toronto on Saturday night but young Tristan Jarry allowed three early goals before being yanked and the Penguins were chasing that game the rest of the way. Pittsburgh has still won five of its last seven games so there is no urgency whatsoever. On Saturday night, we mentioned another new angle we like, that being, “the final game of a home stand angle” before a trip. It paid off Saturday with Colorado over Florida and it could pay off here too. This game caps off a five-game home stand, which is Pittsburgh’s longest of the year. The Penguins will head out to play in Vegas, Arizona and Colorado over the next seven days in what has to be considered the best trip of the season for anyone. The Pens do not play in Vegas until Thursday, which means flying out Wednesday with a lot of time to spend in Las Vegas. Furthermore, Jarry will start here and his confidence could be very shaky after surrendering three quickies on Saturday and subsequently getting yanked very early. Patric Hornqvist may also be forced to sit this one out because of an injury.

The Pens have been caught flat footed several times already this season. They have nothing to prove and will turn up the heat when the time is right. Keeping a team coming off back-to-back Cups motivated all season is probably impossible and this looks like another one of those danger spots. The other side of that coin is every team gets jacked up for a crack at a two-time Cup winner over the past two years. The price makes the risk very worth the reward.
