7:00 PM EST. OT included. The Islanders have reeled off four straight, including a win over Ottawa last Saturday, and have an impressive 7-2-1 record in their last 10. Their offense is producing at a high rate and in fact, is the league’s top ranked offense. They score more than 3.6 goals per game and they have scored five or more in five of their last eight games. The above information means that the Islanders are overpriced almost daily these days and it’s only a matter of time before they hit a snag in the road. Don’t get us wrong, as the Islanders are indeed a dangerous offense but they are also vulnerable because of weak goaltending and a very pedestrian defense. Whether it’s Tomas Greiss or Jaroslav Halak in goal, it really doesn’t matter, as they rank 39th and 44th respectively out of 63 qualified goaltenders. Because goaltending is so volatile, the risk is so much greater when one is spotting prices like this with statistically weak goaltending. That weak goaltending is another reason why the Islanders winning pace is unsustainable. The Islanders very simply have a slew of unsustainable numbers, which also include their 8-0-2 record at home.

The Senators losing streak has reached seven games when they had never lost more than two in a row (in regulation) under Guy Boucher before this. Even worse perhaps is that they have failed to score more than two goals in any of those seven losses. The good news is that the Senators have allowed two goals or less in five of those seven losses (Arizona scored in OT to beat them 3-2 while Pittsburgh and the Rangers both added an empty netter in 3-0 and 3-1 scores respectively). Over the course of those seven losses, the Sens power-play has gone 1-26, which is another one of those luck driven stats we often refer to. There is a very fine line between winning and losing these one goal games and so with a bounce or two going its way, we would not be discussing a Senators seven-game losing streak. They could just have easily won five or six of those contests. The Sens have been in every game of this current losing streak with the exception of one. In Ottawa’s 5-2 loss to Columbus, the game was tied 2-2 going to the third period. The Sens have issues just like any other team and they’re probably a fringe playoff team anyway. They are also not getting strong goaltending. However, the Sens are not being asked to spot a big price here with weak goaltending. Furthermore, the Sens are working hard and have in no way lost its will or has had its spirit broken. The Islanders unsustainable numbers, weak goaltending and being overpriced make them the big risk here and we’re on it.
