Second Round of NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament - Taco Bell Arena - Boise, Idaho

7:10 PM EST. Davidson's record is right in line with the average 12 seeds since 2000, so they're not under-seeded by any stretch, but they are the best 12 seed this year going by our numbers. They boast a very good offense (14th in adjusted offensive rating) and can get hot from deep, as all seven of their key rotation players shoot at least 37% from beyond the arc, propelling Davidson to a team-wide 39.3% clip from three-point land. And it's not just that Davidson can hit treys at a good rate -- they shoot a bunch of them, averaging 27.6 three-point tries per game with the nation's sixth-highest three-point attempt rate (48.6%). Kentucky, on the other hand, sits 306th in three-point attempt rate, so it's certainly a clash of styles. In addition to that, Davidson also has a slow pace in its corner, as they rank 335th (out of 351 teams) in possessions per game. When you add superb three-point shooting to a slow pace, you have the ingredients for a lot of variance. One more thing: Davidson is probably playing its best ball of the season right now, as they've beaten Rhode Island team twice in the past 10 days and had to win the always tough A-10 to get here.

The Kentucky Wildcats need no introduction as they are one of College Hoops' true blue bloods. The churn 'em and burn 'em recruiting process that Coach John Calipari has employed since the NBA's absurd rule that forces players to go to college that would otherwise have gone straight to The Association after high school has not slowed Kentucky down in its yearly pursuit of a national championship. Kentucky hasn't had a great season by its lofty standards, but they're still a very good team that's fresh off its fourth straight Southeastern Conference tourney title with a 77-72 win over Tennessee. If you watched any of that championship game, you heard the announcers and the studio pundits gush over how Kentucky "does it every year" in reference to the Wildcats coming together at the "right time". However, the Volunteers were absolute dregs in that game, and still, the Wildcats had trouble putting them away. This year's UK squad is lighter on experience than most, which is saying a lot. There are no juniors or seniors on the team, but Calipari's bunch still ranks 21st in adjusted defensive rating and 30th in adjusted offensive rating, and their ratings across the board is roughly what we'd expect from a 5 seed. Despite that, UK has a really intriguing matchup with a good Davidson squad, one which checks a lot of boxes when it comes to the profile of an upset-minded team. With that in mind we'll gladly take back these inflated points, as this game is far closer to a coin flip than these odds would have you believe.
