12:00 PM EST. Marquette has lost four of five and six of its last nine. They are only 14-10 overall and 5-7 in the Big East but those results are misleading. The Golden Eagles recently lost to a healthy Villanova squad by just three points. They also lost to Providence by a bucket. This is a Golden Eagles’ squad that lost to Villanova twice but was in both games. They lost to Purdue and Wichita State in their non-conference slate while also defeating Wisconsin by 19. The Golden Eagles have beaten Seton Hall twice, once by 20 points. This is a team that went dancing last year and returned four players who played 25+ minutes per game last season, including two of their top three scorers. The Golden Eagles have a tremendous backcourt, which is college basketball’s most important position.

We’re not going to take anything away from Chris Mullen and the Johnnies because they deserved everything they earned in back-to-back upset victories this past week against Duke and Villanova. The Johnnies not only pulled off the upset, they were a 10½-point dog to Duke and a massive 16-point pooch to #1 Villanova. We might not see a team coming off a 10-game losing streak beat back-to-back top-10 ranked teams in succession for another 30 years. The Johnnies indeed have talent and now they have some serious confidence and swag about them but sometimes things line up perfectly for upsets and that’s what happened here. You see, the Dukies had their biggest rival in North Carolina on deck and got caught looking ahead while Villanova was already without one starter and another one was a late scratch so the Wildcats were down two starters. It is well-documented that the Wildcats are great but they’re not deep and that flaw was exposed by the Red Storm. We played the Johnnies last Saturday to beat Duke and also faded them to lose by more than 16 to Villanova, citing it as a massive letdown spot. The deal today is pure value in another letdown spot, as the Johnnies go from a 10½ and 16-point dog respectively to a favorite against another quality opponent in the Golden Eagles. That can’t be, as the Johnnies were on a 0-10 run and winless in the Big East exactly one week ago at this same time. The house doesn’t beat the bettor. It just gives him/her the opportunity to beat itself and this is a prime example of that.
