5:05 PM EST. Weekends, specifically Saturday’s in MLB have not been kind to us for a long time so for today, we’ll take a bit of a different approach. R+H+E = total number of runs + total hits + total errors. That number is 32 here and this figures to be a complete hit fest with Yovani Gallardo against Martin Perez.

Martin Perez had a mediocre 4.11 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in May. Skill-seekers will note that he posted an upper-tier K-rate in May but the problem is that his 7.1% swing and miss rate, 59% first-pitch strike rate, and 38% ball% gave no support to the elite command he displayed. Perez has a WHIP of 1.63 to go along with a career of disaster starts one right after the other. Perez has never missed enough bats and his poor xERA has held steady for four years. Lots and lots of bad innings are forthcoming but he still might be the better pitcher here.

Gallardo has a vile BB/K split of 31/54 in 71 innings to go along with his 6.11 ERA after pitching half his games at pitcher-friendly Safco. His early results underscore why he’s so bad (6.19 ERA, 1.58 WHIP) and his underlying skills give no reason for optimism. Gallardo is one of the most hittable pitchers in the game and his chances for success at this park against the hot-hitting Rangers are slim.
