8:05 PM EST. Jesse Hahn has 3.03/4.17 ERA/xERA split after five games with just one pure quality start so he’s normally not the type of pitcher we target to get behind. However, this wager has absolutely nothing to do with backing Hahn. Instead, this is a fade against Andrew Cashner, who has the most misleading ERA in the game right now.

After five starts and covering 27 frames, Cashner has an ERA of 2.73. What we have here is another great example of why we don’t recommend buying surface stats. There is nothing in Cashner’s skill set that is worthy of purchasing. He has walked 19 batters in those aforementioned 27 innings while striking out a mere 15. His 5% swing and miss rate is among the lowest in the game and so if you bet Cashner here, you’ll be betting on a guy that can’t throw strikes, is constantly behind in the count and that puts the ball in play at one of the best hitter’s parks in MLB. Cashner’s xERA is 6.72. To recap, Cashner’s peripherals are on a four-year slide and it's across the board. Walks and fly-ball rate are up while first-pitch strike rate, swing and miss and strikeouts all are down. Let's not even talk about that failing grade in health. This is a horrible pitcher with a great ERA and it’s about to blow up.
